Clinical Trials, Health Care

06/ 12/ 2017
The State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (SEC) has developed the first online State Register of Clinical Trials in Ukraine (https://clinicaltrials.dec.gov.ua/). Participation in clinical trials allows seriously ill patients to have a chance for life prolongation or recovery, get a free innovative treatment and examinations according to the international standards. Involvement in clinical trials is growing as the understanding of their importance and benefits grows every year. Clinical trials have been conducted in Ukraine for more than 20 years, but until now, there was no publicly available summary of what studies are conducted and where. It could have been known from international resources only (for example, clinicaltrials.gov), and patients used to request the EBA Clinical Trials Subcommittee to find a trial related to their diagnosis. First the EBA Clinical Trials Subcommittee referred to the state authorities to create such a Register in 2016. Subsequently, the Subcommittee joined the public discussion of this topic. On November 17, 2017, a test version of the Register was published on the specialized SEC website. All trials  conducted in Ukraine and included into the Register undergo extensive review and must be approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Nowadays, any doctor or patient can: Find the list of all clinical trials previously conducted or being conducted in Ukraine Search by keywords (medical condition, disease under study, location, study drugs) Read about the clinical trial site (hospitals, research institutes and their units) and the responsible investigators (doctors) conducting the clinical trial Determine whether the patient can take part in such a trial provided that there are appropriate recommendations from the attending physician. This is a significant achievement in the clinical trials sphere history and it’s publicity in Ukraine! The EBA Clinical Trials Subcommittee is sincerely grateful to the leadership and experts of the SEC for the support and prompt implementation of this joint initiative!
