Legal English: advantages & challenges

Centre, IELTS Academic 2017 Legal English Development Programme is intended for law students, in-house lawyers, and everyone interested in this area. The course is aimed at helping the participants learn English in a legal context. It also gives an insight into the main features of the legal systems of the UK and the USA. All the terms and concepts mentioned throughout the course are universal for different legal jurisdictions. However, special emphasis is placed on the comparison of the British and American systems with Ukrainian realities. The course consists of 10 modules (90-minute classes) and includes a wide range of activities designed to improve all the four main language skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). During the course: - you will have an excellent opportunity to develop specific vocabulary and raise your awareness of legal areas; - you will be able to master your soft skills and practice using English for negotiating, consulting clients, and telephoning with the help of such activities as role-plays, simulations, case studies, group and pair discussions; - you will be also introduced to the language and register required to write legal documents and be in correspondence with clients and overseas partners; - you will discover a number of differences between standard international English and Legal English used in contracts and statutes, which can also be referred to as “legalese”. The materials used for the classes are the most up-to-date books, mostly by Oxford and Cambridge Publishing Houses. The curriculum is supplemented with articles and cases from specialized online resources, magazines, newspapers. The language of the course is English. The required English level is Intermediate and higher.
