On October 9th New Zealand opened an Honorary Consulate in Ukraine. The list of guests that were present at the opening included: Cristopher John Elder, the Ambassador of New Zealand in Russia, representatives from the Embassies of Great Britain, the United States, South Africa, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, citizens of New Zealand that are currently residing in Ukraine and representatives of the agricultural business. The Government of New Zealand appointed Mark Wright as the Honorary Consul of New Zealand in Ukraine.
The key role of the Honorary Consul will be to facilitate the development of business and trade relations between Ukraine and New Zealand. He will also advise citizens of New Zealand on matters, which relate to their stay and business in Ukraine. The Consulate in Ukraine will not issue visas – this will remain a prerogative of New Zealand’s Embassy in Moscow.
Mark Wright has been living in Ukraine for over 8 years. He works in the sphere of sales and marketing. Before coming to Ukraine Mr. Wright owned a paper production company in Papua New Guinea. Then he switched his field of activity and became a regional manager, later a regional director, at Coca Cola company. During his career at Coca Cola he worked in the Philippines, Middle East and Ukraine. Currently he is the Managing Partner of a full cycle marketing agency Pulse. The Honorary Consulate of New Zealand will be located in the agency’s office.
New Zealand comprises two major parts, the North and Southern Islands, where majority of the population lives as well as a number of small islands: the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and the Ross Dependency. The country’s capital is Wellington. New Zealand formally remains a dominion of the British Empire, so the form of government is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The population of New Zealand is about 4.27 million people. There are three official languages – English, Maori and the New Zealand Sign Language. It is a country with a well developed market economy heavily relying upon agriculture, manufacturing, food processing industry and tourism. New Zealand’s economy is closely linked to the country’s international trade. Its main trade partners are Australia, USA, Japan and China. The service sector is the largest sector in the economy (68.8% of GDP), followed by manufacturing and construction (26.9% of GDP) and the farming/raw materials extraction (4.3% of GDP).
