Pricing Regulations for Medical Drugs: For Whose Advantage?

On 4 December the European Business Association organised the second-round EuroDebates considering pharmaceutical issues of current urgency and great significance. This time the EBA EuroDebates proposed the crucial topic for consideration and discussion – Pricing Regulations for Medical Drugs: For Whose Advantage? The attendees convened to focus on the key aspects raised by the EBA EuroDebates agenda like medical drug price setting and new rules to establish regulations for the pharmaceutical market.
The Eurodebates, hosted by the Ball Room of the Hyatt Hotel (5A Tarasova str), featured state officials, leading experts and players in the pharmaceutical sector, businesses, NGOs and mass media. Among the key guest speakers there were:
- Mykhailo Efremov, State Expert of the Council on National Security and Defence of Ukraine
- Volodymyr Ignatov, Head of EBA Health Care Committee
- Yuriy Haydayev, Member of the Parliament, Committee of the Verkhovna Rada on Health Care issues
- Mykhailo Pasichnik, President of All-Ukrainian Public Organisation ‘Pharmacy Professional Organisation of Ukraine’
- Volodymyr Dudka, President of Association of Pharmaceutical Distributors ‘FarmaUkraine’
- Petro Bagriy, President of Association of Pharmaceutical Producers of Ukraine
Representatives of leading pharmaceutical associations tried to fully analyse the current issues and explain to mass media people how the current market situation looked like. All attendees agreed that under the circumstances the pharmaceutical industry would inevitably collapse, unless some immediate measures were not launched. Apart from that, the EuroDebates participants focused their attention on discussing rights of patients suffering serious consequences of the crisis.
The participants sounded a bit enlivened while marking the fact that President adopted the Decree on cancelling some CMU regulations on medical drug mark-ups. Yet, a few people believed that this Decree, when enforced, would help improve the pharmaceutical market situation. Representatives of foreign producers noted that the current regulations would damage or even ruin any business operations.

About EuroDebates
The European Debates (EuroDebates) are undoubtedly one of the most powerful vehicles – an EBA project aimed at strengthening constructive dialogue between the business community and representatives of legislative and executive authorities. As well these regular meetings serve as one of the main means for EBA members to enhance the vis-à-vis dialogue with the European Government officials.
From late 2007, the European Business Association started holding the EuroDebates as live broadcasts on the Channel 5 TV channel. This format gave EBA members a much bigger audience for polemic on issues vital for the entire business community of Ukraine.
EuroDebates begin at 5:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., which is more convenient for the business schedules of EBA members and invited guest speakers. In line with their concept, EuroDebates are held as ‘open events’ with the mass media. The participation of representatives of the mass media is subject to mandatory accreditation. This year the European Business Association held its EuroDebates every two months away from the EBA office.
We are proud of the fact that top officials of the Ukrainian Government are open to direct communication with EBA members, and that the EBA EuroDebates became for many EBA members a very efficient method of streamlined communication with the government. Each EuroDebates session gathers over 80-250 participants including EBA members, authorities, external experts and media. Only in 2007 EBA EuroDebates has already hosted over 20 keynote speakers. |
